The Ford Fiesta R1 started life as a showroom model Fiesta Zetec. This standard road car was heavily modified by the tech wizards at M-Sport – one of the world’s premier motorsport companies – to turn it into the 126bhp R1, a genuinely impressive and safety-compliant rally car.

The R1 – so called because it conforms to R1 race specification – has been modified with personal safety and underbody protection. It includes a welded steel roll cage and highly specialised competition brake pads, but uses a standard production engine and transmission components.

Racing in British Junior Rally Champion Gus Greensmith’s own R1, Idris competes in a number of stages of the hugely challenging 1,500-mile Circuit of Ireland Rally.

First held in 1931, it’s the third-oldest rally competition in the world and held predominantly on paved public roads closed to other traffic during the rally stages.
